Why Tourists Are Avoiding Goa: Law and Order Issues, Growing Liquor and Drug Mafia
Neglect of Infrastructure and Law & Order Problems
Goa, once a popular tourist destination, has seen a significant decline in tourist inflow in recent years. The state government, over the years, has neglected vital infrastructure such as potholed roads, the increasing presence of stray animals, and heaps of garbage scattered around. The deteriorating law and order situation has also contributed to the growing concerns. Adding to this, the mushrooming liquor and drug mafia has further tarnished Goa’s reputation as a safe and family-friendly destination.
Declining Popularity of Goa Among Tourists
While foreign and domestic tourists were once flocking to Goa, many have now shifted their attention to other destinations like Dubai, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Despite being aware of these problems, the Goa government has failed to take adequate measures to stop the decline in tourism. Hotels even reduced their prices in an attempt to attract tourists, but this has had little effect on the situation. Today, Goa is looking increasingly deserted and neglected.
Lack of New Attractions and the Cheap Availability of Liquor
Another significant issue contributing to the decline in tourism is the lack of new attractions. For decades, Goa has not introduced anything fresh or exciting for visitors. The only thing available in abundance and at cheap prices is liquor, which, while attracting some, is not enough to maintain the state’s tourism industry in the long run. Without addressing these critical issues, Goa’s status as a top tourist destination is increasingly under threat.
