Modi’s ‘One Nation – One Election’ Dream: A Contradiction? – Devinder Singh Surjewala

Contradictory Approach on Elections
Congress leader Devinder Singh Surjewala has raised concerns about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Nation – One Election’ proposal, calling it contradictory. While Modi has advocated for conducting all elections together, Surjewala pointed out that in the past 10 years, the preference has been to hold elections for various institutions at different times. Surjewala also emphasized that Modi has eagerly participated in every election, even at the municipal level.

Doubts Over the Success of the Idea
Surjewala described the Modi era as being dominated by rallies and questioned whether the idea of ‘One Nation – One Election’ would ever succeed. He noted that even local body elections in Haryana are being held in phases, which goes against the very concept of simultaneous elections.

Could it be Another ‘Jumla’?
Surjewala also expressed doubts over the success of the proposal, saying, “This could turn out to be another jumla, where there’s a gap between what is said and what is done.” कहीं ये भी जुमला ही ना साबित हो। “कथनी और करनी में अन्तर” ! ‘अध जल गगरी छलकत जाए ???
