Is Renu Bhatia Chairperson Women Commission Haryana above Law?

Renu Bhatia, Chairperson of Haryana Women’s Commission, Under Scrutiny for Alleged Threats Against NRI

Chandigarh: Renu Bhatia, the Chairperson of the Haryana Women’s Commission, has come under scrutiny after allegedly threatening an NRI man over a complaint filed by his wife. The incident, which was reportedly communicated via phone, has sparked a heated debate about the legal and ethical conduct of public officials.

According to sources, Bhatia threatened the NRI individual, stating she would have him deported and his parents arrested if he failed to return to India within 10 days to address the complaint filed by his wife. In a recorded message, Bhatia is allegedly heard saying, “I will get you deported, you scoundrel (डिपोर्ट करवा दूंगी साले। कहीं चौधरी बन रहा हो). If you’re hiding somewhere as a ‘Chaudhary’, I will ensure you face consequences.” I  She also reportedly instructed the local police to immediately register a case against the NRI’s parents and have them arrested if he does not comply.

This development raises significant questions about the powers and responsibilities of public officials, especially in sensitive cases involving accusations of domestic disputes. Legal experts and critics have expressed concerns about the chairperson’s actions, suggesting that such threats, if true, could potentially be seen as an abuse of authority.

Alleged Violations of Supreme Court Directives

This isn’t the first time Renu Bhatia has found herself at the center of controversy. Previously, she faced backlash for allegedly violating directives issued by the Supreme Court of India. During a public event, Bhatia is said to have publicly listed complaints made by women police officers from Jind against their superiors in the presence of videographers, which was seen as a breach of the confidentiality of the investigation process.

The Supreme Court had specifically instructed that such matters should not be made public without a proper investigation and resolution. Critics argue that Bhatia’s actions in both the aforementioned cases raise serious concerns about her understanding and adherence to legal procedures.

No Response from Renu Bhatia

Attempts to reach Renu Bhatia for comment have been unsuccessful. She neither picked up the phone nor responded to messages seeking clarification on her alleged conduct.

Legal and Public Reaction

Legal experts argue that public officials, especially those holding sensitive positions like Bhatia, must operate within the bounds of the law, ensuring that their actions do not cause harm or intimidate individuals. Threatening deportation or arrest without proper legal grounds could lead to serious legal ramifications, including potential charges of misconduct or abuse of power.

Local observers have also voiced concern over what they describe as a growing “attitude of impunity” among some public figures, who believe they can use their positions to influence or intimidate people without facing consequences.

As of now, there has been no formal investigation into Bhatia’s actions, but calls for accountability are growing louder. Many believe that the incident highlights the need for transparency and checks and balances within public institutions, particularly those entrusted with the welfare and protection of women.

The incident continues to unfold, and further updates are awaited.
