Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, while handing over appointment letters to 700 newly selected ETT teachers, highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s success, saying that Modi came from Gujarat to Delhi and became the country’s Prime Minister. Similarly, he himself came from a village in Punjab to Chandigarh and became the state’s Chief Minister. Therefore, the teachers who received postings within 20 km should not worry. He also apologized to ETT teachers who were assigned stations 15 to 20 km away.

Mann’s mention of Modi’s success during this event has become a topic of discussion in political circles. His statement is factually correct—Modi indeed rose from Gujarat to become the Prime Minister. However, Mann did not cite the success of his own party’s leader, Arvind Kejriwal, who moved from Haryana to Delhi, became Chief Minister, and has held the position for over ten years. This omission has led to speculation that Mann is leaning towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The current political scenario in Punjab is such that no party’s popularity is increasing significantly. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won power in 2022, is not as dominant as before. Back then, AAP was also in power in Delhi with Kejriwal as its Chief Minister. However, after AAP’s defeat in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, the party’s position has weakened. This has raised concerns for Mann about retaining power in 2027. He may be realizing that it could be difficult for AAP to win Punjab on its own, especially after the Delhi debacle.

The BJP is now strategizing to gain control in Punjab, either by forming the government independently or with support. Evidence of this can be seen in the Punjab Assembly’s budget session, where Governor Gulab Chand Kataria praised the Punjab government extensively. Not only is he applauding the government’s initiatives, but he is also actively supporting them.

For instance, Punjab has launched a campaign against drug abuse, and Governor Kataria has planned a “Drug-Free March” from April 3 to April 8, covering the route from Dera Baba Nanak to Jallianwala Bagh. This march is part of the “War Against Drugs” campaign, in which both the state and central governments are collaborating. The Governor has also met legislators, ministers, and officials to discuss the drug problem and organize the march.

Kataria’s alignment with the Punjab government contrasts sharply with his predecessor, Banwarilal Purohit, who had an ongoing conflict with the state administration.

Mann’s newfound appreciation for Modi and the BJP raises questions about his evolving political stance. Historically, the BJP has never been able to form a government in Punjab on its own. Instead, it has partnered with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which ruled the state multiple times under Parkash Singh Badal. However, after SAD severed ties with the BJP in 2021 over farmers’ issues, its influence has dwindled. As a result, the BJP appears reluctant to rekindle its alliance with SAD.

To win Punjab in 2027, the BJP has already started groundwork. Its strategy has often been to align with unexpected political forces in states where it cannot secure power independently. It seems that, in Punjab, Bhagwant Mann is emerging as a feasible option.

The Governor’s frequent praise for the state government and Mann’s admiration of Modi’s success signal that both sides may be preparing the ground for 2027.
